Coverage of Singapore’s resale market has recently featured Jas Pang, founder of WeLoveCuratingSG (which started out as WeLoveChanelSG before expanding beyond the one house), speaking directly to a problem buyers keep running into: counterfeits are increasingly showing up in spaces marketed as “preloved” or “resale”, not just in obvious counterfeit hotspots. One example she points to: an Instagram seller was ordered to pay Louis Vuitton S$510,000 in damages, a reminder that “too good to be true” pricing, her own litmus test was a S$250 Van Cleef, is rarely a victimless shortcut. The warning is a useful prompt to revisit the basics of what actually protects a buyer.
The Checks That Actually Matter
None of this requires being an expert yourself, but it does require asking the right questions before you pay. Who authenticated this piece, and what’s their process? Can you see close up photos of the hardware stamps, stitching and serial or date codes before you commit? Does the seller answer clearly, or do they get vague or defensive? A genuine, confident seller should have straightforward answers to all three.
Where TROVE Fits In
This is exactly why we don’t treat authentication as a footnote. Every piece we sell or accept on consignment is checked in house by our own team first, and we’re happy to walk any buyer through exactly what we looked at and why. If a piece doesn’t hold up, it doesn’t get listed, full stop.
Have a piece from elsewhere you’d like a second opinion on? Message us on WhatsApp, we’re glad to help even if it’s not something you bought from us.
