S$180,000 in Fakes Seized Near Orchard Road: Why Authentication Matters

Singapore Police officers raided two retail shops along Scotts Road, near Orchard Road, on 16 September 2026, seizing more than 900 items suspected of infringing trademarks, ranging from luxury bags and watches to clothing, footwear and accessories, with an estimated street value of over S$180,000. Two women, aged 39 and 54, were arrested. Police said they “take intellectual property rights infringements seriously,” and violators under the Trade Marks Act 1998 can face fines of up to S$100,000, up to five years’ jail, or both. The raid was also covered by MustShareNews.

Why This Matters When You’re Buying Preloved

Cases like this are a useful reminder that counterfeits aren’t limited to street stalls or online marketplaces. They can turn up in retail shops in the middle of a prime shopping district. If a piece looks the part but comes with nothing real behind it, there’s no way to know for certain what you’re actually holding, or what it’s actually worth.

How We Handle It Differently

Every piece that comes through TROVE, whether it’s something we’re selling or something a client is looking to consign, is authenticated in house by our own team before it’s listed or accepted into the collection. We don’t outsource this, and we don’t skip it, no matter how good a deal looks on paper.

A Few Things Worth Checking Yourself

Whoever you’re buying from, it’s worth asking who authenticated the piece, and how. A seller who can’t answer clearly, or who discourages questions, is a signal worth taking seriously. Stitching consistency, hardware weight and finish, and date stamps that match the era of the piece are all things a genuine authentication process should be able to speak to.

If you’d like more detail on how a specific piece in our collection was authenticated, message us on WhatsApp and we’re always happy to walk you through it.
